Leadership is essential. Leaders are trusted, influencers, communicators, and leaders lead by example. Leaders create trust by showing Soldiers they are supported and defended by the leader. Soldiers perform at a higher standard when they feel respected and treated with fairness. You must set goals and targets to improve your ability as a leader. A leader’s ability to influence others can improve their effectiveness in getting the desired objective accomplished. Leaders should be open to asking questions. By asking Soldiers questions, they will understand the mission. Two-way conversations are a good way to give and receive feedback from Soldiers. Communicating will help to avoid the famous saying “That is my statement, but not my intent.” Be an example and get involved. Get out there and demonstrate to Soldiers that your team is here. Respect the rules and regulations. Leaders who are adamant about following the rules and regulations will not be respected by their followers. Leaders must have a deep understanding of the job and do the actual work. While not necessarily the most skilled person, it is essential to know the job well. To develop, you must take actions to guide and teach others to learn new skills and resources. This will allow them to grow their skill sets and knowledge to be more competent and/or responsible.
