Comparative Analysis Of The Disengagement Theory And Activity Theory In Terms Of Its Relation To The Caregiver

This discussion post will allow me to compare two theories on aging and how they relate to the care provider, describe something new I have learned, and share a piece of information which will influence my nursing career. There are many different theories about aging. All of them show normal aging. I am going to look into the disengagement and activity theories. Both theories have similarities and differences.

This theory states that as individuals age, they become less engaged and active in the society. According to this theory, it is beneficial for both the individual as well as society. The younger generation can gain more responsibility and power in the society and prepare to replace the older individual.

The activity theory says that older adults are happier and healthier if they remain active. It says that when an adult begins to age and lose previous hobbies, they should start new ones. Some activities an older individual can engage in are: spending time with their family, joining groups and reading. They can also visit family members or do chores.

Both theories involve the amount activity an elderly person participates in. Both theories are characterized by normality and benefit. They differ based on the level of activity each represents. In the disengagement model, less activity would be considered normal. However, in the activity model more activity would be deemed beneficial.

This assignment has taught me that an elderly person’s decreasing interaction with society can be seen in positive light. I didn’t realize that the less activity they do in society helps them prepare for their death and also society. This makes more sense after reading the articles. How I interpret patients’ behaviors will be a major influence on my nursing career after I learn about the theories of ageing. It is now clear to me that people react differently to aging. The aging process will affect the way patients behave, and that is okay. Some patients will be active in their activities and with family, while others might not. It is important to understand that some patients may be active with their family and activities, while others may not want company.

Disengagement theory and Activity theory are similar and different. Understanding different theories helps me become a more effective nurse, as I can provide care based on how patients are perceived by society instead of the way they perceive themselves. I have gained more knowledge from this discussion.
