Volunteering Is One Of The Most Important Things You Can Do’: How One Student Is Tackling The Environmental Crisis

Growing up in Cornwall has instilled in me a sense of responsibility towards the oceans. As a child, I became passionate about making art out of the plastic waste I found on beaches, and at the age of 11, I launched my first website to raise awareness and funds for the Marine Conservation Society. During my undergraduate studies in marine biology at Plymouth University, I became acutely aware of the dire state of the oceans and the pressing need for action.

In 2017, along with my father, I co-founded Beach Guardian CIC, a social enterprise aimed at promoting community beach cleans around Padstow. The response from locals was overwhelmingly positive, and we now have a large group of volunteers who have made Beach Guardian an integral part of their lives. We have even expanded our reach beyond Cornwall, hosting outreach events and workshops for schoolchildren across the UK.

Through my involvement with Beach Guardian, I have gained valuable experience in grant applications, event planning, and public speaking. When I see the positive impact we have on people’s attitudes towards our throwaway society, it inspires me to continue this important work.

As a postgraduate student pursuing a master’s degree in conservation science and policy at Exeter, I am eager to broaden my horizons and learn beyond the discipline of marine biology. My peers have been incredibly supportive, and I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share my passion for sustainability.

Although managing my studies and activism can be challenging, I am determined to continue working toward positive change in any way I can. Volunteering has been instrumental in expanding my network and developing my professional profile. It is vital that sustainability is integrated into all aspects of postgraduate education, and that every profession is equipped to play a role in addressing the climate crisis.

Fortunately, Exeter University is a hub of sustainability expertise with a wealth of peer-reviewed research and partnerships with organisations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Through initiatives like Tevi, businesses are being encouraged to take steps towards environmental sustainability.

While top-down change from policymakers and industry is essential, every individual has the power to make a positive impact on the environment. As a student, I believe it is crucial to take advantage of university societies and other opportunities to advocate for sustainability and make a difference in our communities.
