A Study Of John Davis Rockefeller’s Early Life, Wealth And Power

John Davis Rockefeller emerged as a brand name in the early 18th century. Rockefeller stood for monopoly, economic concentration, and power. My research project was inspired by his fascinating story and his compassion for his company. My understanding has been enhanced by simply researching and locating enough sources to complete the project. Rockefeller was so well-documented that it was difficult to select the best articles from journals and historical documents. Rockefeller’s life is fascinating. PBS.org, History Study Center and Gale Biography In Context are just a few of the many websites that provide a wealth of information on Rockefeller’s origins, family history, and legacy. Rockefeller’s achievements led to the development of horizontal integration, trusts, and other financial instruments. He was a hard worker who brought prosperity to his family. It was a great experience to do this research. Not only was it informative, but my choice of John D. Rockefeller’s life as a topic made the project even more interesting.

Rockefeller attended a school for professionals. He studied banking, commercial law, double-entry accounting, and penmanship. He maintained meticulous records of his finances. Each receipt, donation and expenditure was noted. Rockefeller joined the oil business in his unusually early age of 24 with Maurice Clarke, Samuel Andrews. Rockefeller, along with his partners, struck a deal that was pivotal in the oil business. The railroad guaranteed them a specific volume of shipments as a reward for rebates. Rockefeller was devoted to his work and started Standard Oil of Ohio, the largest company in the United States. Rockefeller was the richest person in the United States at 40 years old. My research began with me knowing very little about petroleum. Rockefeller’s fame and my knowledge of it were vague. Pbs.org provided me with detailed information about Rockefeller’s life. The website I used provided all the tools that I needed, like interactive maps and graphics, to carry out my research. I admire the work and ambition he had to become rich. It is impressive how dedicated he was to his work.

The analysis of the website allowed me to learn about Rockefeller’s history. The article in the journal gave me a look into the world of business. Blaine McCormick Jr and Burton W Folsom Jr authored “A survey Business Historians An America’sGreatest Entrepreneurs”, an article about “greatness”. It is about how leaders of business perceive “greatness.” This article explains how entrepreneurs like John D. Rockefeller transformed American business. This article gives us a sense of Rockefeller’s influence at the time. Rockefeller’s wealth gave him more power to influence politicians. This article is not meant to represent Rockefeller and his lifetime achievements. But it does show that he struggled to achieve success. Rockefeller, amongst other wealthy businessmen, remembered him for his risk-taking ideas and financial stability in the economy. He overshadowed the power he had as Standard Oil’s business giant. He was able to gain control of and ownership of Standard Oil through horizontal integration. Standard Oil became well-known across the country because of this horizontal integration.

Power and wealth can make a person or break him. Rockefeller’s role as a multinational in the American economy has made him one of America’s most important tycoons. This article does not explain his business success, but rather his extraordinary personal life. Rockefeller had many foundations. But the Rockefeller Foundation is most known for its involvement in financing University of Chicago. He also used his money to help fight diseases of the day, like yellow fever and worms. Rockefeller’s success story can be a source of inspiration for everyone. The story shows that greatness can be achieved with money and power. Standard Oil was the first American company to implement a trust. Trustee powers for widows, orphans or estates were more expansive than corporate trustee powers.

The transformation of American businesses is reflected in the relationship of wealth to influence. This is due to the diversity of businesspeople and entrepreneurs. Rockefeller was a charismatic figure during the research. My respect for Rockefeller grew as a result of his generosity and dedication in working. Rockefeller was not a very popular person at first, but his long journey to success made him a hero. I was most inspired by his dedication to hard work.

P.W. Wilson’s article “John D. Rockefeller at Ninety” explains Rockefeller’s ambitious nature. Wilson’s “John D. Rockefeller in Ninety”. P.W. Wilson’s article has helped me to understand Rockefeller, his wealth, and his passion for hard work.
